PREMISE
An absorbing story about serial killers on the run, is based on the real-life murder spree of Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez during the late 1940s and Detective Elmer C. Robinson’s participation in their capture, incarceration and subsequent executions. Ray and Martha travel around together posing as brother and sister, preying on lonely, vulnerable women. Their scam first milks them of their life savings and ends in the murders of several innocent women. They are a warped and dangerous duo who leave a bloody trail behind them. As their investigation progresses, Detective Robinson and his partner Charles Hilderbrandt become obsessed by the capture of the ‘Lonely Hearts killers,’ as they are known in the press. The work invades Robinson’s personal life and isolates him from those he loves - forcing him to choose between his family and his profession.

REVIEW
Wow. That's what I say about the acting in this movie. The characters are developed through narrative mostly so the acting has to be great and boy is it ever. Selma Hayek's portrayal of Martha Beck is especially noteworthy.

The wardrobe and dialogue are spot-on for the period.

Gandolfini serves well as both the character of Charles Hilderbrandt and as the narrator.

At times, the story feels rushed scene to scene. If the viewer doesn't pay attention to the narration, the characters will seem undeveloped and lifeless with the exception of Martha Beck.

RECOMMENDATION
Even if your a veteran of Film Noir, this movie will knock you backwards with it's open sexual imagery. The violence coupled with that will make you marvel at the 1940's period setting despite itself.

Put the kids to bed or send them to your in-laws for the night before firing up the DVD player on this one folks.
