Oceano - Depths:
All of the bands with the -core suffix have been getting all the breaks, and all the attention. Their promoters have to milk their way to get these bands to the top, bands of which are getting the credit they do not deserve; metal fests that aren't metal. Why everyone takes the time to publicize these acts is truly beyond me. The true acts of death metal have been the ones struggling lately, and its hard for any of the up and rising to get onto a show worth going to anymore. With that thesis statement said, I present you with another review on a another cliched act: "Depths" by the new Chicago slammers that call themselves Oceano.

The song structures are very predictable. I just simply cannot stress enough how pitiful, talentless and effortless they are. Although when plainly put, it is a noodle fest. Reason being, the same tremolo picking being heard throughout, and are played only on the lowest notes with as little notes to be possibly played. There is absolutely no substance or change to them. Breakdown after breakdown. Power chord after power chord. Riffs being regurgitated here, there and everywhere. Clearly, they like combining the recycled ideas of Whitechapel and Suicide Silence. Worse, the one long-haired guitarist looks like he knows what metal is (and does), yet he subjects himself to playing this degrading form of "metal."

Now moving onto the bass: What bass? I can't hear bass. All I hear are the seven-string Korn guitars. If anything, the bassist is probably just playing the root notes. Of course that is not to say that this is atypical with every deathcore band these days. As a bassist myself, that is the top one peeve I have.

The drummer is nothing special. Blast beats, double bass and 4/4 beats. Sure, they may be good. But it doesn't hide the fact that he does nothing else, and nothing technical as fgar as good metal musicianship goes. Just the same three of those techniques being heard again and again.

Oh, and have you already heard every other deathcore band do intake vocals and guttural squeals as if it was a reenactment of Deliverance? Exactly.

One kid may say "BRUTAL RIFFS. F*CKING BRUTAL BEATS. FUCK THE HATERS." All I hear from that is a weak uneducated individual begging for his life: "Bree this, bree that. Gonna fight in the pit! Gonna f*ck that sh*t up! Got gauges the size of the gangsta rims on my Civic, yo."

Why don't you just shut the f*ck up? Go to a real concert and see how you fare.
